Talkin' Jazz

Talkin’ Jazz is a community music program for young jazz musicians to meet, learn and play.

Resources for jam sessions

Please note though that hardcopies of music will be available at all jam sessions for all different instrument types and vocalists.

Talkin' Jazz provides access to a selection of core and group charts for each Jam Session. If you have little jazz music experience, these classic jazz standards are an essential part of the jazz repertoire and a great place to start. We also have copies of the Jazz Real Books, in all keys, at every Jam Session. These are books containing a very large range of jazz repertoire.

A really important part of learning this repertoire, and the language of jazz in general, is through listening. Listening to classic examples of these tunes teaches you how they sounded originally. Listening to other or more modern arrangements might show you some alternative ways to approach this music.

SOME COMMON JAZZ STANDARDS:

A-Train

All Of Me

Autumn Leaves

Blue Bossa

Blue Monk

Blue Skies

C-Jam Blues

Cold Duck Time

Fly Me To The Moon

St. Thomas

Other resources

We’ve compiled a couple of other links here to connect to and engage with the broader Australian Jazz Community.

Dingo - australian jazz journal

A fantastic Australian run magazine about jazz in Australia. It includes interviews with Australian musicians, features about aspects of jazz in Australia and reviews of albums and equipment.

The Australian Real Book

The Australian Jazz Real Book is dedicated to the preservation and distribution of Australian Jazz in both digital and print. A great resource full of wonderful music by Australian composers. It does require a subscription/fee to access.
